Franz Rothlauf received a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the University of Erlangen, Germany, a Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Bayreuth, Germany, and a habilitation from the University of Mannheim, Germany, in 1997, 2001, and 2007, respectively.
Since 2007, he is professor of Information Systems at the University of Mainz. He has published more than 200 technical papers in the context of planning and optimization, evolutionary computation, e-business, and software engineering, co-edited several conference proceedings and edited books, and is author of the books “Representations for Genetic and Evolutionary Algorithms” and “Design of Modern Heuristics”. At the University Mainz, he is Academic Director of the Gutenberg School of Business (since 2013) and Chief Information Officer (since 2016).
His main research interests are the application of machine learning and modern heuristics in planning and optimization systems. Currently, he is a member of the Editorial Board of Evolutionary Computation Journal (ECJ) and ACM Transactions on Evolutionary Learning and Optimization (TELO). Since 2007, he is member of the Executive Committee of ACM SIGEVO. He was treasurer of ACM SIGEVO between 2011 and 2019. Between 2019 and 2023, he served as chair for ACM SIGEVO. He was chair of GECCO 2009. In 2024, he received the SIGEVO Outstanding Contribution Award, which recognizes remarkable contributions to Evolutionary Computation.
My research focuses on the fundamentals and applications of metaheuristics and machine learning methods. As a Business Informatics specialist, I also deal with aspects of the interaction between users and information systems.
For example, we are working
In recent years, I have also focused on the design of air traffic networks, Indian Gaming, car sequencing, multimedia and interactive learning modules, cooperation between companies and NGOs, and other topics.
